Many Vendors such as Novell, Sun and more recently Microsoft have developed directories based around LDAP and X.500 standards.

Which Directory Service is the best?

No two companies are exactly alike. And choosing a Directory Service should meet the business needs and match the company's existing skill set and IT investment. That said, Novell's NDS e-Directory is perhaps the most mature and reliable of all the directory services currently available.

Properly implemented e-Directory provides a rich set of functionality which can demonstrably reduce the total cost of ownership, and with over 10 years of development and fine-tuning it is considerably more stable and advanced than Active Directory.
